Construction of Main Facilities Kickoff

Date Posted: 2000-01-22

The construction of a Press and Amenities Center, which media crews from all over the world will use during the G8 Summit period, was launched last Friday, January 14th.

The building project was decided on by the Foreign Ministry of Japanís Government, but the Okinawa General Bureau is in charge of the actual construction management. The cost of the whole project has been evaluated at about •2.5 billion (•2,467,500,000).

The Press Center building will be a 2-storey construction consisting of working space for press crews and press conference rooms. As for the Amenity center, it will have a place where the meals are served to all members of the press during the Summit. The two facilities will be built around the 21-Seiki-no-Mori areas, near close to the site where Nago City Hall is located.

The architectural style of the Press center building, according to sources close to the projectís execution, is said to be reminiscent of Okinawan traditional heritage and regional patterns, a combination of original and modern designs. With this combination of styles, the Press center building will represent one of the main facilities that Okinawa would like to showcase to the world.

Construction efforts will be completed around the end of May or in the beginning of June. These buildings will be deconstructed after the Summit jamboree is over. Most of the building materials have been borrowed through a lease agent, and will be recycled after the Summit.
