Naha Assembly votes against Marines’ Osprey

Date Posted: 2012-05-30

The Naha Municipal Assembly is now on record; it opposes the American deployment of the MV-22 Osprey to Okinawa.

The assembly voted unanimously to demand the U.S. and Japanese governments call off the planned deployments. The tilt-rotor aircraft are expected to arrive at the Army’s Naha Military Port in mid-July.

Officials say current plans call for the MV-22 Ospreys to be based at the Futenma Marine Corps Air Station in Ginowan City, beginning in October. Unclear for now is where the helicopters will operate during the time between arrival on Okinawa and the transfer to Ginowan.
