Tokyo gains attention at Edo-Asakusa exhibition

Date Posted: 2012-05-25

Tokyo old and new are gaining attention this week at the Edo-Asakusa Exhibition now in progress at Okinawa Mitsukoshi.

The Edo element of the exhibition stems from Edo being the former name of Tokyo and the capital area during the shogunate in the Edo Period 1603-1868. Following the riot of the anti-shogunate forces, and the surrender of the shogunate side in 1868, the name Edo was changed to Tokyo, and Edo castle became the imperial palace.

Tokyo still continues to evolve, with high technology and skyscrapers sprouting throughout the city, nestled alongside ancient buildings and the antique face of Japan’s capital. The Asakusa district is one of the most famous parts of Tokyo, filled with the old atmosphere. With Tokyo’s Sky Tree Tower opening only two days ago, the exhibition will also feature highlights of the new landmark.

Okinawa Mitsukoshi is capturing the best of both sides of Tokyo during its Edo-Asakusa Exhibition on the 6th floor of the department store on Kokusai Street in downtown Naha City. The exhibition runs through May 28th. Daily hours are 10:30 a.m. ~ 7 p.m., with last food orders at 6:30 p.m., through the 27th. On the final day, the exhibition opens at 10:30 a.m. and closes at 5 p.m., with the last food orders at 4 p.m.

Anago (conger eel) bowls, Asakusa beef bento boxes, tuna sushi, Tsukiji soba, Kusa dango, Youkan and many sweets are being served at the exhibition. There’s also an eat-in corner for fresh Tokyo specialties. There’s another section of the exhibition featuring Asakusa silver crafts, classic hand fans, handkerchiefs, Furoshiki, Obi, traditional knives and other Tokyo specialties.
