Okinawa cola creation debuts in June

Date Posted: 2012-05-25

A new cola with an exotic twist is about to be unveiled as Okinawa joins the cola generation.

Okinawa Brown Sugar Cola, also called Okinawa Kokuto Cola, hits store shelves on June 4th, an Okinawa Prefecture collaboration with Japan Tobacco Inc. The new cola contains a high-quality brown sugar from Hateruma Island of Okinawa, with a dash of mineral-rich salt from Ishigaki Island, also located in Okinawa, added to bring out the refreshing taste of the drink. The package of the drink features a picture of the blue skies and ocean of Okinawa, and the bright red Hibiscus flower on the side is a nice touch that enhances the image of the islands as a tropical paradise.

Japan Tobacco Inc. notes that Okinawa’s always been a popular tourist destination for Japanese tourists, and hopes to capture a bit of the island mystique with the new beverage. JT, a partner corporation involved in the “Food Action Nippon” project, which is a movement to keep both tradition and creativity alive in Japanese food and cooking and also improve Japanese food self-sufficiency, says it hopes to promote and open new possibilities for Okinawa food products.

The cola will be sold at ¥140 for a standard 500ml bottle. The Okinawa Brown Sugar Cola comes to market only a month after another cola, a fat-busting cola, made its debut.
