ANA bests competitor JAL on passengers

Date Posted: 2012-05-25

For a second year in a row, All Nippon Airways outdid its rival, Japan’s national carrier, by flying more passengers.

ANA admits that while topping Japan Airlines Co. last year, it felt the pinch too, experiencing a 4.1% drop in domestic passengers. The slump to 36.68 million was attributed to the Great Tohoku Earthquake and Tsunami last March 11th. Japan Airlines group carriers flew a total of 35.81 million passengers in the business year just ended.

All Nippon Airways’ overall passenger count was 42.56 million, down 1.2% from 2010-2011. Still, ANA says things are looking up because its international passenger traffic has surged 22.2% to 5.88 million. ANA says its expanded list of overseas flight destinations accounts for the third consecutive year’s growth.
