Drunk driving, car crash lead to Miyakojima worker arrest

Date Posted: 2012-05-25

A Miyakojima City Waterworks Section worker has been arrested on charges he was both drinking and driving, and crashing his car into another vehicle at an intersection.

Tadayoshi Maesato is charged with violating the Road Traffic Law after he crashed into a car driven by a 50-year-old self-employed woman as she passed through the intersection. The crash caused the woman injuries, including cervical sprain.

Miyakojima Police say the 58-year-old Maesato was driving a mini-wagon while drunk when he crossed over a one-lane road in Higashi Nakasone, Hirara, Miyakojima City, about 8:28 a.m. Friday. He first crashed into a fence at the corner of the road after colliding with the car driven by the woman. Police officers responding to the scene say Maesato was so drunk, he was not able to walk normally. A blood alcohol test showed Maesato’s level of alcohol at six times to standard permissible value. Maesato has admitted to the drinking.

Miyakojima City’s Vice Mayor, Masaharu Nagahama, is concerned about the arrest of a city employee. “We have roused the attention of our staff at regular meetings,” says Nagahama, “but after receiving and reading the report (on Maesato), it is really a sorry affair. We apologize to the person who was injured.”
