Campus bomb threat leads to total building evacuation

Date Posted: 2012-05-25

More than 2,300 people got an unexpected break from classes at the University of the Ryukyus after a sealed letter indicating an explosive had been set near the entrance to a major faculty building was discovered by a staff member.

Only moments after the letter stating “I set an explosive” near the entrance to the university’s Faculty of Law and Literature Office Building at 8:30 a.m. was found, police initiated an evacuation. Urasoe Police say they’re not sure if the incident was a case of pernicious mischief, or something more serious, but will investigate thoroughly all possibilities.

Ryukyu University immediately canceled all classes for the day for the Law and Literature building, and restricted entry to the building even after the building was swept for explosives. Also affected by the evacuation were faculty in the tourism science department. Students milled about, confused because they didn’t know why the evacuation was taking place.

University officials say that when the building was locked at 10:30 p.m. the previous night, May 16th, there was nothing at the entrance. A university spokesman says the threat in the letter was ominous: “I will explode the University of the Ryukyu’s Faculty of Law and Literature on May 16th and 17th. If the explosion is disturbed, I will drive recklessly by car on the premises of the university.” The spokesman says “we see it as pernicious mischief. It’s really an inadmissible matter socially.”
