School teacher arrested for stealing from school

Nago Police have arrested a 40-year-old elementary school teacher and charged him with stealing money from a staff room in the Nago school where he worked.

Suguru Yonamine has confessed to stealing •168,300 from the elementary school, telling police he used the cash for gambling, including time in front of a pachinko machine. Yonamine, who lives in the Miyahira district of Haebaru Town, admits stealing money several times from a clear case in the desk of a female teacher in the staff room.

The thefts came between November 8th, 2011, and March 5th, 2012. Officials say the stolen cash was part of an album of graduation fees collected from sixth grade children. An elementary school public relations person says the stolen cash was detected on March 5th, at which time the school began an investigation. The school discovered Yonamine, who taught a fifth grade class, had been involved.

Yonamine told police heís already paid the cash back, and that he began leave from his job at the school in April. The Nago City Board of Education says itís glad a complete and thorough investigation was accomplished, and that the Prefectureís training will address future incidents, but regrets the crime ever occurred.
