40 vendors open at Ryubo Setouchi Exhibition

Date Posted: 2012-05-18

The Setouchi inland sea encompasses nine different mainland Japanese prefectures, enough to inspire Ryubo Department Store to stage a special San-in and Seto Inland Sea Exhibition.

San-in means the most northeastern part of mainland Japan except Kyushu, and Setouchi is the area of the inland sea between the mainland, Kyushu and Shikoku Island. The inland sea touches nine different prefectures –Yamaguchi, Hiroshima, Okayama, Hyogo, Osaka, Wakayama, Kagawa, Tokushima, Fukuoka and Oita—as an important water lane dating back to ancient times. For that matter, it’s still a great fishing ground, with some 400-500 different species of sea creatures still in the waters.

Ryubo’s regional exhibition, which runs through May 21st on the store’s sixth floor, features 40 different shops that have foods and goods from the San-in and Setouchi areas. The exhibition operates daily 10:30 a.m. ~ 7:30 p.m., except the 21st when doors close at 5 p.m. Tonkotsu Shoyu Ramen from Tokushima, Japanese Izumo Soba and Sabasushi from Shimane, Udon from Kagawa, beef sirloin, oyster rice and Hiroshimamiyaki, also known as Okonomiyaki from Hiroshima will all be available. Also on tap: fresh milk from Okayama, Imabari towels, pearl and knives from Ehime, and also sweets and Japanese crafts.

The exhibition also draws attention to the historical figure Dr. Philipp Franz Balthasar von Siebold of Germany. He migrated to Japan in 1823 and conducted cram classes at a medical school for Japanese. His connection here is his description of the San-in and Seto Inland Sea region as being ‘awesome’. Geographer Ferdinand Freiherr von Richthofen, who named the ‘Silk Road’, is also famous for his references to the area being so beautiful, one has to see it to believe it.
