New hotel going up on former U.S. training site

Date Posted: 2012-05-18

A former U.S. military training area turned back to Japan last summer is about to begin a new life as a hotel.

Tsuyoshi Gibu, Kin Town’s mayor, has concluded a memorandum with a Malaysian capital enterprise group that has announced plans for constructing a large hotel on the site. Kin Town officials say they’re not sure of the specific points and details, such as the name of the new hotel, but it’s expected that DiJaya Group, a leading real estate and development group that manages commercial facilities, hotels and apartment building development in Malaysia, will be involved.

The hotel will stretch across some 10 hectares, and officials say there may be a combination of buildings and cottages constructed. The hotel is expected to be open for business in 2015. DiJaya Group manages a variety of facilities, including resort facilities such as Tropicana Golf & Country Resort.

The 70-hectare site was formerly the U.S. Forces Ginbaru Training Ground. Kin Town also plans on establishing medical and rehabilitation facilities, as well as a sports complex, on the former military site. Kin Town officials have long tried to attract enterprises willing to build lodging facilities that would let the town promote activities for visitors who could stay long term.
