Date Posted: 2012-05-12

A taxi attempting to make a U-turn crashed into a 1100cc large motorcycle with two persons riding, killing the 38-year-old motorcycle driver and injuring his passenger.

The incident happened when the motorcycle approached the taxi from behind on Highway 58 in the Afuso district of Onna Village about noon. The cyclist, Hideki Terukiya, died in the accident because of an injury to the vascular tract on his neck. A 28-year-old woman who rode on the back seat of the motorcycle was seriously injured with the broken right collarbone and a rib.

According to Ishikawa Police, when the 65-year-old taxi driver who had stopped along a pedestrian walkway by the roadside tried to make a U-turn, he failed to notice the motorcycle that approached from behind. The taxi then crashed into the motorcycle and knocked it down. The taxi driver suffered light injuries including lacerations on his head.

Ishikawa Police investigating the cause of the accident say they suspect that the taxi driver was negligent in not checking the road thoroughly enough in his rear view mirror.
