Date Posted: 2012-05-04

Okinawa’s early summer flower is the orchid, and the 19th Nago Orchid Festival is touting the colorful flower through Sunday.

Besides the Nago Orchid, the Iriomote Orchid, Vanda Lamellate Lindl and more are on display at the First Floor Exhibition Hall at Neo Park Okinawa’s main building. On-site sales and planting short courses are being held, and expert orchid growers are on hand from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. to give advice and answer questions today through May 6th.

The Nago Orchid is one of a group of endangered orchids that was found at Nago Mountain in Nago City in 1971, and the distribution area is wide, reaching as far as the Izu Islands, Kii Peninsula, Shikoku and Kyushu, but Nago Orchid grown wild has dropped sharply because of reckless hunting. Now, it is very difficult to see the Nago Orchid grown wild in Nago City.

The Nago Orchid is well-known by a lot of people as a very beautiful orchid with a sweet, agreeable, fragrant smell. The festival is open daily 9 a.m. ~ 5:30 p.m., with last entry to the exhibition hall at 5 p.m.
