Patrol car in accident while responding to emergency

Date Posted: 2012-05-04

A police car running with red lights and siren on while responding to a reported fight in progress crashed into a graduate student’s car as it was running through a red traffic light.

The 43-year-old Uruma City Police officer struck the 24-year-old female graduate student’s vehicle as he was heading to a reported fight in Uruma City’s Akamichi district. As the policeman raced through an intersection against the red traffic light, he reportedly was distracted by another car that had stopped on the left side of the road. At that moment, the woman’s car entered the intersection on the green light, and the cars collided in the Ohta district roadway.
Police say the woman suffered a slight injury that could require one month to heal. The police officer was not injured.

The police officer admitted that he had been careless, and that caused the accident. The Deputy Chief of Uruma Police, Hiroshi Kinjo, says “We apologize to the victim. We will put an extra effort into preventing such accidents from happening in the future.”
