Rainy season gets an early start on Okinawa

Date Posted: 2012-05-04

Eleven days earlier than normal, Okinawa has begun its rainy season.

The Okinawa Meteorological Observatory says the Okinawa Island entered to the rainy season at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, two days ahead of last year. It is the third earliest on record since the statistics started in 1951. In the Okinawa Islands area, rainy areas become numerous because of the effects of a volley of atmospheric pressure and dampened air streams.

Not that anyone had control, but Okinawans generally were not pleased at the early start, on the eve of the big Japanese string of holidays known as Golden Week. The weather was cloudy with light rain in Naha, and many tourists visiting Okinawan products shops and walking on Kokusai Street were seen putting up umbrellas.

The Okinawa Meteorological Observatory predicts that Okinawa will have numerous rainy and cloudy days over the remainder of the Golden Week holidays, which officially end Saturday, but in practical terms run to early next week as people make their way back to their hometowns.
