JAL eyes new international flight hubs

Date Posted: 2012-04-27

Japan Airlines Corp., buoyed by its expansion on international routes using new fuel-efficient Boeing 787 Dreamliners, plans to add multiple overseas flight hubs each year over the next four years.

"We would like to select a number of hubs annually," JAL President Yoshiharu Ueki explained this week during a trip to the United States, adding that cities in Myanmar and China that are projected to see rapid growth are among the candidates. The airline is also considering resuming services to the Indonesian resort island of Bali.

JAL already announced plans to add Boston and two other destinations to its international operations this year, to boost transportation capacity over the next four years by 25%. Ueki says the key factor in choosing new hubs "is whether we would be able to operate flights profitably."

JAL began flying the midsize Dreamliners on a new service linking Tokyo and Boston on Sunday using the Dreamliners, whichs consume around 20% less fuel than similar size conventional aircraft.
