China Town exhibition opens tomorrow

Date Posted: 2012-04-27

The 11th Yokohama China Town exhibition opens tomorrow for a ten-day run through Golden Week.

The exhibition featuring 33 shops takes place on the 6th floor at Okinawa Mitsukoshi on Kokusai Street, running daily 10:30 a.m. ~ 7 p.m. Yokohama’s China Town is well known in Japan, and is featuring 21 food stands and a dozen crafts booths at the exhibition.

Yokohama’s China Town has been well over a century in development, drawing tourists from throughout the country. As the best known of the nation’s China Towns, Yokohama is in Kanagawa Prefecture, located next to Tokyo. Yokohama’s the capital city of Kanagawa Prefecture, and holds the title of being Japan’s largest city, not counting borough areas like in Tokyo. Yokohama also has the largest population of any city in Japan.

Kanagawa Prefecture hosts the largest number of American military facilities and installations aside from Okinawa. Yokusuka Navy Base and the Army’s Camp Zama are two of the best known bases.

In 1854, Matthew Calbraith Perry asked to open Japan and set aside its national isolation, and he stayed off shore of Kanagawa for two months until the Japanese government finally entered into an agreement, the Convention of Kanagawa, and Kanagawa became an international area.

People of many nationalities filtered into the region and concentrated in the Kanagawa area after the agreement. English, French, German, American and Chinese all began calling Yokohama home, and China Town is a relic of that era.

The 11th Yokohama China Town Exhibition features genuine Chinese food, including Ramen noodles, Gyoza, Fried rice, Yumcha, Bento boxes, sweets, and healthy foods. On the crafts side, there’s plenty to see, including clothing and jewelry.
