Cocktails, T-shirt mark 20th Ie Marathon anniversary

Date Posted: 2012-04-20

Beaming with pride, tiny Ie Island on Okinawa’s northwest coast is introducing a locally produced rum cocktail and a tee shirt as it marks the 20th anniversary of its Circling Ie Island Marathon.

“We are welcoming visitors,” says Ie Village Mayor Katsumasa Oshiro, “and we want to celebrate the 20th anniversary of the marathon with a new tee shirt and new cocktails.” The marathon was last weekend, and Oshiro is happy to have the commemorative tee shirt, as well as its home produced Ie Rum Santa Maria, produced by the Island Products Center.

Beginning with the marathon weekend, the village is featuring the rum cocktail, made by mixing rum and Ie-produced sodas. One, the Okinawa Libra, is a mix of Ie rum, brown sugar based coke and shiqwasa juice, while the second is the Okinawan Mojita, with the rum base jazzed up with mint abstract and shiqwasa juice. Hisato Chinen, who was part of the team creating and producing the drinks, says both have characteristic fresh taste.

The price for a 200ml bottle of either cocktail is ¥380. Both are sold only at Ie Village, at least for now. Chinen says “we created local cocktails that use ingredients only from Okinawa and Ie Island.

The marathon tee shirt was designed and made in the village, initially for distribution to runners entering the race.
