What's UP Okinawa!? 2012 hits stage on Sunday

Months in the planning, and only a week after contestants were finalized, What’s Up?! Okinawa 2012 is set to hit the stage at Toyosaki Chura Sun Beach on Sunday.

The festival kicks off at 12:00 noon with famous local artists. The top performers, including international guests from the famed Okinawan based American label SFRecords including popular R&B singer Stephanie Soul, K.I. Double D, Yung Bless, One Twenty and Yung Polo, are scheduled for 4 p.m. ~ 9:30 p.m.

The event will be an all-day festival, a celebration of Hip Hop culture, with special booths dedicated to cornrow braids, fashion and limited merchandise from top brands in Tokyo, street food vendors. Visitors are reminded to bring Japanese yen, as U.S. dollars will not be accepted. Pets are welcome, elementary school children are free of charge, and the price for military personnel is $20, making the festival perfect for families taking their kids out to the beach. The $20 special military discount price will be given to all visitors who bring this Japan Update article to the entrance (up to 2 people for every article).

Toyosaki Chura Sun Beach is the biggest artificial beach on the Okinawan main island, located just south of the Naha Airport. Heading south on R331, make a right at the Senaga intersection, take the Tomishiro bypass bridge until you see the Hotel Gran View Garden Okinawa on your right, make a right before OTS Rent-A-Car, cross a short bridge and you will reach the parking area.
