11 a.m. fire guts three buildings in Nanjo

Date Posted: 2012-04-06

A fire that broke out in a wooden, tile-roofed one-story home in Nanjo City’s Chinen district tested the mettle of fire fighters who spent hours dealing with the conflagration as it spread to two additional buildings.

The fire began about 11 a.m. when, according to Yonabaru Police, a 59-year-old man living in the private residents was exterminating termites in the wood-frame home using a portable gas burner to kill insects that had come to the surface. A wooden support pillar then caught fire, quickly spreading to engulf the whole house.

Flames then leaped across to a two-story concrete building standing on the same site, and then on to a steel pre-fabricated office building. Firefighters say all three buildings were completely destroyed.
