Princess Cruises head to Japan

Date Posted: 2012-04-06

Princess Cruises are about to enter the Japanese market, initiating nine different cruises with seven different itineraries.

Carnival Corp., operator of Princess cruises, will launch the 87-day program from April ~ July 2013, offering cruises running 9~12 days. A company spokesman says its Sun Princess cruise ship will depart from Yokohama and Kobe. The company says it anticipates carrying more than 18,000 passengers during the three months.

The Miami-based Carnival is creating Carnival Japan Inc., to handle the Princess Cruises and other Carnival brands in the country. Carnival Japan, to be led by Eiko Kijima, will be based in Tokyo.

Carnival is working around worse-than-anticipated first quarter losses, and has reduced its profit predictions. Carnival is reeling from the negative publicity surrounding the deadly Costa Concordia capsizing off the coast of Italy in January. Costa Concordia is operated by a Carnival subsidiary.
