Drunk driver causes massive accident

Date Posted: 2012-04-06

One person has been seriously injured in a dozen-car car accident caused by a self-styled young daiko or substitute driver in Naha.

Naha Police have arrested 22-year-old Chouou Shimabukuro on charges of negligent driving result in injury in the aftermath of a 5:05 p.m. accident, in which he’s accused of crashing into a string of cars stopped at a traffic light in Naha City’s Omoromachi district.

A 53-year-old man is in serious condition with a fractured facial bone, while nine others suffered minor injuries. Shimabukuro was taken to a Naha hospital himself after he was found unconscious following the accident.

Police think Shimabukuro’s escapade began while trying to evade and flee from a 61-year-old taxi driver after he’d scraped the taxi’s right side mirror moments before. The taxi driver told police Shimabukuro had been speeding. The police investigation showed Shimabukuro with double the permissible amount of alcohol on his breath. The Daiko driver is suspected of driving while under the influence, neglect of his duty to maintain due care, crashing into a series of cars and thus causing an accident, and engaging in behavior that caused injuries.

Shimabukuro was driving toward Highway 330 from the San-A Naha Main Place at high speed when he drove between two lines of cars waiting at a traffic light, crashing and scraping on them on both sides..
