China Airlines increases Japan flights, routes

Date Posted: 2012-04-02

Travelers will have new options this weekend as Taiwan’s largest air carrier, China Airlines, increases its flights and routes into Japan.

Rising demand, says a China Airlines official, is responsible for the airline to increase its flights into Japan by 30%, while at the same time adding new destinations. Additional flights start Sunday between Taipei and Tokyo, Osaka and another pair of destinations.

New service is being instituted to Shizuoka, Kagoshima and Toyama from Taipei. The added flights boost the weekly number of flights from 90 to 119. China Airlines currently flies twice daily to Okinawa, and is preparing for its subsidiary airline, Mandarin Airlines, to fly to Okinawa.

The new routes and flights are a result of an open skies agreement signed between Taiwan and Japan last year. The open skies agreement permits Taiwanese carriers to offer unlimited numbers of flights to any Japanese destination except Tokyo.

Japan is Taiwan’s second largest trading partner, behind China, and has already signed an investment deal with Taipei to boost trade. China is formally recognized by Japan, but Taiwan and Japan have maintained close ties despite Japan having colonized Taiwan during the 1895~1945 period.
