Okinawa Original Tent Sale Introduces Unique Island Icons

What are the advantages of Habu Sake? What do the Shi-shi dogs represent in the eyes of the Okinawan people? What is the secret behind of the Okinawans’ legendary longevity?

Due to its uniqueness and peculiarity, many who are exposed to the culture of Okinawa for the first time cannot help but wonder about it. However, for those whose bewilderment still lags, the opportunity to get a clue is now: it is at the Okinawa Original event at the Kadena Service Mall.

Running from this Thursday, January13th to Monday, the 17th, the Okinawa Original Tent Sale brings a bit of Okinawa’s finest art and hand-made products - from the traditional musical instruments to cosmetics - on Kadena Air Base. At this One-Stop-Okinawa Tent Sale, a large selection of handcraft items such as wooden birds, baskets, pottery by the local artists, are on hand. The cosmetics, including herbal soaps, lotions, bath salts, bath seeds made from natural herbs, are available at reasonable prices. When it comes down to Okinawa Awamori, the event offers a good occasion, not only for those who have never tried it and are interested in tasting it for the first time, but also for those who love it and want to explore its variety. Approximately 300 brands of the Okinawan spirits are on sale, and Awamori tasting is offered daily.

Demonstrations of Karate, Clay pottery, Basket and Bingata by native professionals are also on the program. It is a good chance to take a close look at the unique processes of professional, traditional handcrafts of Okinawa. For those who have questions, English-speaking assistants are happy to out on behalf of the local artists who don’t speak English.

Taiko Drums and Japanese dance performances will add a festive mood to the event. Taiko Drum performances will be featured from 3:30pm to 4:00pm on the 15th and 16th, while the Japanese dance performances have been planned for the 17th at 11:45am. Taking pictures with a live (well trained) giant Python, is another option at the event site.

During the five days of the event, visitors who register for the raffle draw at the Kadena Main Exchange have chances to win free tickets for a tour in Gyokusendo Kingdom Village, overnight stays at Renaissance Hotel. Free AT&T services, Hot Dogs and drinks will be also offered on Saturday and Sunday.
