Resident taking walk discovers unexploded shell

Date Posted: 2012-03-30

For the second time in less than a week, police and explosive ordnance disposal specialists have been summoned to Okinawa City after an unexploded shell was spotted by a resident walking through a Takahara district neighborhood.

Police, a Okinawa City Hall worker and a Japanese Self Defense Forces specialist all responded to the scene quickly, where they inspected the shell and determined it had no fuse and would not explode. The shell was found in the Takahara district, while two shells were found less than a week earlier in the Chuo district.

Authorities say they believe the shells were dumped at the location, because other illegally dumped items, including a bathtub, were found in the same area. Okinawa City workers then covered the shell and several meters of area surrounding it as a protective wall until the shells could be removed by other specialists.

The shell was described as 30cm long and 7.5cm in diameter. Officials say “those shells could really be dangerous,” and cautioned citizens to immediately call the police, or the nearest city, town or village office immediately “if you discover an unexploded shell.”
