Garbage truck overturns; snarls traffic for hours

Date Posted: 2012-03-30

A garbage truck driving down Highway 58 in Chatan Town’s Mihama district swerved into the center median to avoid an out-of-control car, and rolled over on its side, but only minor scratches to two men in the truck resulted.

The afternoon accident did, however partially block Highway 58 in both directions, causing a traffic logjam that stretched more than a kilometer and lasted nearly two hours. The 38-year-old truck driver and his 43-year-old co-worker suffered on minor scratches.

Okinawa Police say the car driven by a 60-year-old civil servant was driving in the second lane when he suddenly lost control and skidded on the wet road, scraping the garbage truck traveling on the third lane. When the garbage truck tried to evade the crash, it struck the central divider and turned on its side.
