Parasailing Mother and Son Miss Death in Onna Waters

Date Posted: 2000-01-15

A mother and son, from Okayama Prefecture in Mainland Japan, came as tourists to Okinawa with the hope of experiencing the sport of parasailing. On January 4th, Ootsuki Yasue, age 58, and Ootsuki Kazuma, age 29, rented a hotel parasailing boat for an afternoon sail in Manzamou waters located in Onna Village. One of the sixteen ropes connected to the sail failed to work well, causing the boat to overturn, casting the two tourists into the water. At approximately 1:45 p.m., a boatman and a passing onlooker rescued both of them out of the water. The mother was found unconscious in the water, but later fully recovered in the hospital. The son was uninjured.
