JSDF NCO busted for drunk driving

Date Posted: 2012-03-23

A 45-year-old Japanese Ground Self Defense Forces NCO has been arrested on drunk driving charges after driving his mini car through a police checkpoint in Tomigusuku’s Iranami district about 2 a.m.

Tomigusuku Police say Sergeant First Class Hideki Nakato ran the checkpoint on Route 331, then continued toward Itoman City. Police were in pursuit, and found Nakato’s car crashed into a traffic sign about 400 meters past the checkpoint. Nakato was arrested and when tested, was found to have triple the legal limit of alcohol on his breath.

Nakato complained to police about pain in his crotch as a result of the crash, and was taken to a nearby hospital, where doctors ruled he’d suffered a broken tendon in his crotch. Because he was hospitalized, he was not initially arrested, and the investigation was continued on a voluntary basis without detention. The JSDF NCO told police he was on his way home after drinking with a friend at a Naha City restaurant.
