Disco makes way to Gangara Valley Cave Café

Date Posted: 2012-03-16

It’s a unique concept being tried by the owners of Cave Café in the Gangara Valley near Okinawa World south of Naha City, with disco making its debut this month.

The Cave Café owners say it’s the first time there’s ever been a ‘Cave Disco’ in the premises of a natural limestone cave. The nostalgic 70’s disco music is being offered Saturdays this month, with ‘Glean Piece’ being featured Saturday, ‘Grain Mustard Ashimine A & Anison Café Candy’ on March 24th, and ‘Ponytail Ribbons’ on the show on March 31st. Included in the programs will be a Children’s disco time that provides kids some entertainment on their level.

The children’s disco takes place from 6:30 p.m. ~ 7:30 p.m. each Saturday, followed by the special guest performances at 8 p.m. Advance Admission is ¥2,500 for high school students and adults, and ¥1,000 for elementary school students. The price includes food and drinks. An additional ¥200 will be charged for admissions paid at the door. Children under school age are admitted free when accompanied by an adult or guardian.

The venue is a natural cave, so there are water droplets dripping from the ceiling. The venue, owners note, is non-smoking. Daiko services are available for those who opt to drink alcohol at Cave Café. The new Okinawa black beer, Nihede-beer Black Ale, is being offered for a limited time.

Gangara draws its name from a species of butterflies living in palm trees of India and Sri Lanka. With the name skewed a bit, it’s also the name of a family of orchids native to Central and South America. The visit experience begins through a large cave that houses the Cave Café. The café serves coffees brewed from locally grown beans. The Gangara Valley owners also offer daily guided tours four times each day, with each starting at the Cave Café.

Gangara Valley Cave Café is located in Nanjo City on the southern part of the island, just across the road from Ryukyu Kingdom Village and Gyokusendo Cave theme park. From Kadena, take the Okinawa Expressway south and get off at Haebaru Minami exit. Continue south through Kochinda and follow signs to “Cave”. At the end of the road, turn left. The Gangara Valley parking lot is on the left, 50 meters from the intersection.
