Solar energy generating plant set for Okinawa

Date Posted: 2012-03-02

A company that builds and sells solar power generators for homes and apartment buildings is taking another step into green energy, announcing plans to build a large solar energy production plant in Okinawa.

Ecolumiere says it will build a mega solar plant with the capacity of generating more than one megawatt of electric power. It will set up its mega solar power plant with a 1~2 megawatt capacity in ten locations within the next three years, with a target of ultimately having 20 locations. The company says it is taking advantage of opportunities for a purchase system of renewable energy for a fixed price starting in July, and will join the electric power business with capital support from Cooperation Company, Shibaura Group Holdings.

The company says its business operations will begin this year, once they’ve identified a site in Okinawa. Shibaura Group promotes construction in Japan to increase generating power from solar power by building plants providing up to 300 megawatts within the next three years. Tetsumi Shinchi, president of Shibaura Group, says his company’s investing in Ecolumiere because Okinawa seems a perfect location for setting up the new plants.

Shinchi says land purchase costs and set up costs for new facilities are reasonable in Okianwa. Ecolumiere will manage the operations, and repay Shibaura Group from profits from selling the electricity. Ecolumiere will ultimately receive ownership of the lands and facilities.
