Aomori backs off BJL entry for next season

Date Posted: 2012-03-02

Plans for a new Aomori Prefecture expansion basketball squad coming into the Basketball Japan League next season have been dashed, sending officials scrambling to figure what the league’s composition is going to be.

Aomori, along with the Gunma Crane Thunders, were to have joined the league next season, bringing the number of teams to 22. With Aomori out, it means the league will have to shuffle things with an odd number of teams for next season. Reports from basketball insiders say the Aomori team’s backers have encountered financial problems.

The Basketball Japan League has expanded each year since its start with six teams in 2005. The Ryukyu Golden Kings were an expansion team four years ago.
