Tomigusuku, Naha fires thought to be arson-set

Date Posted: 2012-02-24

Fire investigators in both Naha and Tomigusuku Cities are putting their heads together to figure who’s behind a rash of suspicious fires that destroyed seven motorcycles and blackened an apartment wall earlier this month.

Officials say arson is probable, since the fires were all within a 2km radius of each other. Tomigusuku Police have taken the lead in the investigation, which began with six motorcycles set ablaze and burned violently in an apartment building parking lot in the Tomigusuku City’s Madanbashi district. Plastic bumpers of cars parked near the motorcycles were also melted by the heat.

A four-story apartment building wall was scorched by fire, with the flames licking all the way up the side of the building and across the roof. Police say there were also damages to a window and outdoor air conditioning units. At another location in the Kagamihara district of Naha City, a delivery motorcycle’s engine was burned at a pizza delivery shop.
