Yani Tseng holds on to beat Ai Miyazato

Date Posted: 2012-02-24

It was down to the wire, with a potential playoff looming between Okinawa’s Ai Miyazato and Taiwan’s Yani Tseng at the LPGA Thailand title, when the 23-year-old LPGA leader rallied to defend her title.

Tseng outdistanced Miyazato on the Siam Country Club’s Pattaya Old Course, shooting a 6-under-66 to finish at 19-under-par 269, enough to win by a stroke. Miyazato, who’d won the same event in 2010, birdied her final two holes in scoring a 67 for the final round.

“Of course, Yan is No. 1, so I knew it wouldn’t be easy,” Miyazato said coming off the 18th hole at Chonburi, Thailand. “I kind of expected her to play that way.” Miyazato had birdied the 10th and pulled within a stroke of Tseng on the par 4 15th and then was even with Tseng with a par on 16, and birdies to wrap up. “Overall, I played really well, and I’m very happy I could finish strong,” she said of her season debut. “I really enjoyed playing with Yani, but next time I want to win,” she added.

The second place finish pushes Miyazato back into the top LPGA Top 10 rankings, moving from 11th to 9th. Both Miyazato and Tseng have competed in 50 events in gauging the standings.
