Au data malfunction impacts 6.15 millionDate Posted: 2012-02-17 ![]() KDDI, the operator of Au mobile phone services, blamed the Saturday evening disruption on an electricity supply failure to a batch of e-mail servers, but noted that the failure did not affect phones themselves. The KDDI spokesman said its proprietary ezweb email service went down from 8:35 p.m. until just before midnight, the largest disruption since 12.79 cell phones were interrupted in August 2003. The KDDI spokesman says internet service was also not affected, adding that the failure may have been triggered by an increase in smartphone data traffic. Telecommunications industry experts say KDDI suffered a similar incident earlier in the week, when as many as 1.3 million users, including those with Au smartphones, lost ability to connect with the internet. The problems come at a time when the government has already warned KDDI’s competitor, NTT Docomo, and urged it to put into place countermeasures to improve facilities following its own series of service disruptions. KDDI has been ordered to file a report before the end of March with the Internal Affairs and Communications Ministry, outlining improvements. |
