Roller Derby teams to honor Girl Scouts

Date Posted: 2012-02-17

The Kokeshi Roller Dolls season continues this month with a fourth live-action roller derby bout.

The Shisa Slammers and Habu Hellions will battle it out on the track February 24th with Okinawa’s fastest Jammers lapping through the pack of the hard hitting Blockers in an intense bout that promises an evening of excitement. Tickets are $10 or ¥1000, and will be sold at the door. Kokeshi Roller Dolls team skaters will also be handling pre-sale tickets.

Girl Scouts from around Okinawa will be in attendance, as well as regular derby fans. Girl Scouts pay only $1 admission if they wear their uniform. Girl Scouts enter through a ‘GSA Fast Track’ ticket line and will be seated in a special section to enjoy an autograph session and meet and greet with the players. More than 20 Girls Scouts earned their skating badge last fall with volunteer instructors from the Kokeshi Roller Dolls at Round 1 Sports Center. ‘We are excited to share the sport of derby with the Girl Scouts!’ said Heather Brown, aka Puncher Down Brown, Kokeshi Roller Dolls’ President.

The Roller Derby League is reminding spectators to bring extra cash and snag some KRD merchandise including T-shirts, water bottles, koozies, tote bags, stickers, and more. Local food and drink vendors will be located outside the arena; food and drinks are allowed on the second floor only. Shoes are not allowed inside the venue, so please bring a bag to carry them in.

The Dolls adhere to the rules developed by the Women's Flat Track Derby Association (WFTDA). The skater-owned, skater-run league is made up of over 60 players, coaches, non-skating officials, and referees. Get involved with KRD by using their contact form on their website or by emailing joinKRD@kokeshirollerdolls.com. They are currently recruiting for skaters, coaches, referees, and other non-skating official positions.

Doors at Comprehensive Park open at 5 p.m. and the skating action starts at 6 p.m. Directions to the park, and a map to the Comprehensive Park Arena, is at www.kokeshirollerdolls.com/about.php. The main entrance for parking is located off Hwy 227 through the Torii entrance.
