Japanís flu season higher than usual

A survey of 5,000 hospitals and medical facilities across Japan indicate this influenza season has been more deadly than in recent years.

The Japan Infectious Disease Laboratory says the number of influenza patients this year averaged 35.95 per facility, based upon a study the last week of January. The results were significantly higher than a year ago, when the count showed 31.88 patients per facility.

Fukui Prefecture recorded the highest number of cases, with 74.88 patients per facility. Okinawa was below the national average, with 28.31 patients per facility. The Ministry of Health, Labor and Welfare says the number of cases had been steady over the past ten years, until this yearís jump.
