Kadena, Yomitan unhappy with Air Force blasting

Date Posted: 2012-02-10

Kadena Air Base has conducted its fifth blast disposal of unused ordnance at its ammunition storage area, despite demands by Kadena Town and Yomitan Village that the operations be cancelled.

Complaints have been lodged with town or village offices each time the Air Force explosives disposal operations take place, because residential areas are only two kilometers away. A Performance Day in local elementary schools was a primary reason for the two municipalities to complain this time. Five elementary schools in Yomitan Village and Kadena Elementary School, a total of six elementary schools in the area, conducted Performance Day for 3,700 students.

The Okinawa Defense Bureau made a request to the Air Force in advance of the latest disposal operations, asking for an adjustment in the amount of munitions being eliminated, and asking how many blasts there would be. The ODB says the Air Force at Kadena did not provide clear answers.
