Yuirail Monorail finally gets 4.1km extension approval

Date Posted: 2012-01-27

Work will begin next year on a 4.1km extension to the Okinawa Monorail Yuirail, thanks to approval of an application submitted to the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism more than a year ago.

The monorail extension, which will have four passenger stations, will be complete in 2019. The extension will carry Yuirail from the Tera district in Shuri, Naha City, to Maeda, in Urasoe City. The project is expected to cost 35 billion. Infrastructure will account for 23.1 billion of the cost, while ancillary expenses will add another 11.9 billion.

An approval grant ceremony was held in Tokyo. Now that the Monorail Company has its authorizations, it will announce medium and long-term planning concepts that were not included in the original application. Several of the changes involve attention to the environment, while others address exchanges of views with local residents.

Okinawa Prefecture will detail design and route surveys, and will start the work by land examination and beginning negotiations for the land. Okinawa Prefecture and the monorail company agreed to all five measures the government imposed on the project.
