Pro baseball team donates ¥100 million to Nago City

Date Posted: 2012-01-19

The Hokkaido Nippon Ham Fighters, one of Japan's professional baseball teams, knows and loves its spring training home in Nago City, and is expressing that love with cash.

The team is donating ¥100 million ($1,333,335) to the city in appreciation for support provided to the team and its players since the Hokkaido Nippon Ham Fighters began spring training in Nago City in 1978. The team says its contribution is to thank the city for its efforts over the 34 years, providing stability to let the team have its spring workouts in a single location. A team official says the team hopes Nago City will use the money for area growth and development of sports programs.

Nago City mayor Susumu Inamine, in making the announcement, praised the Hokkaido baseball team, noting “this is the first time that any ball club that has their spring camp in Okinawa has donated such a large amount of money to its host community.” Inamine says the donation ceremony will take place February 1st at the start of this year’s training, and “we receive the money with appreciation, and will put the money to advancement of sports.”
