Okinawa’s Jeff Newton draws BJL attention

Ryukyu Golden Kings center Jeff Newton’s drawing Basketball Japan League attention, along with players from the Hamamatsu Higashimikawa Phoenix and the Shimane Susanoo Magic.

The Atlanta, Georgia native who turned 31 yesterday, is being credited with being the sparkplug that led the Golden Kings to a 6-2 December, holding league foes to an average of 72.3 points in eight December games. The Golden Kings are now 19-5, the best record in the league. Newton, an Indiana University graduate, is the only player in league history with four championship rings.

Herve Lamizana, a Hamamatsu Higashimikawa Phoenix forward, has been chosen Japan Times’ Defensive Player of the Month for December. Lamizama is credited with 16 blocked shots, including five in a win over the Shinshu Brave Warriors and six against the Saitama Broncos, along with seven steals during his 135 minutes of playing time in eight games during December.

Michael Parker of the Shimane Susanoo Magic also was recognized for his December actions. Parker had five games with two or more steals, eight blocks and 31 defensive rebounds.
