Garbage truck catches fire while working route

Date Posted: 2012-01-05

A garbage truck driver working a route of private homes in a Ginowan residential area got more than he bargained for when his truck’s trash bin suddenly made an explosion sound and caught fire.

The Ginowan City Fire and Police Departments were quick to take charge of the 11:48 a.m. fire in the Maehara district, dousing the fire in a matter of 40 minutes. The garbage collection truck was supposed to be collecting non-burnable refuse, but investigators think a little ‘something extra’ was in the loads being picked up.

From the mountain of burning garbage that the truck had unloaded on an empty piece of land, fire fighters and investigators repeatedly heard explosion sounds while they battled the blaze, leading to the conclusion spray cans may have been tossed into the trash and not noticed by the garbage truck operator. When the truck’s compression unit went into service, the cans being crushed exploded.
