Landslide kills construction worker at Kadena Air Base

Date Posted: 2011-12-30

A 42-year-old construction company worker was buried alive while working on a drainpipe at a project on Kadena Air Base.

Okinawa Police say the worker, Tsuyoshi Uema, had been working on changing a drainpipe at a project on Kadena Air Base when he was buried alive by a landslide at 10:20 a.m. last Wednesday. The victim was immediately transported to a nearby hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 11:57 a.m. Uema was changing a drainpipe at a house near Kadena Air Base Gate 1 at the time of the accident.

Police say Uema had entered the two-meters-deep drain alone, and that the dig collapsed while the man was measuring its width. Okinawa Police say other construction company crew needed about 20~30 minutes to get Uema out. He was in cardiopulmonary arrest when he arrived at the hospital.
