Drunk teen cyclist crashes into cop car

Date Posted: 2011-12-30

A 17-year-old is hospitalized following a bout of drinking, then riding a motorcycle without a license, and crashing into a Urasoe Police patrol car.

Police have charged the boy with drunk driving, a violation of the Road Traffic Law. He has also be charged with multiple counts of reckless driving, drinking and driving without a license on Highway 58 in Gusukuma, Urasoe City, at 2:45 a.m. last Wednesday. The final chapter in the drinking-and-driving bout was when he crashed into the police car, for which cops have charged the youth with disturbing police conducting their official duties.

The boy suffered head injuries when he struck the police car, but officers say his injuries are not life threatening. The boy tested at three times above the allowable legal limit for alcohol.

Okinawa Prefectural Police say they’re worried about reckless driving incidents during the holidays and the coming New Year’s weekend, so will strengthen cooperation with police officers operating on motorcycles. Police say it is the only way they can give chase to motorcycle gangs.
