Motobu restaurant worker denies fraud charges

Date Posted: 2011-12-30

A 20-year-old restaurant worker has been arrested by Motobu Police and charged with perpetrating a fraud, but the young man is denying it.

Ryu Morokida of Motobu’s Inoha district is accused of swindling ¥550,000 in cash from an elderly Nakijin last month. Motobu Police say Morokida went to the 73-year-old victim’s home in Nakijin Village and told him he was expecting “money to be transferred to me, but I don’t have a bank account.” He promised the man “I will give you a commission, so please let me use your bank account and bankbook.”

He took the victim to a Motobu Town convenience store, where Police say Morokida talked the man into withdrawing ¥550,000 ($7,236) from his bank account through a store ATM. He told the victim it was the sum he was supposed to receive.

Morokida quickly fled the scene. Once the victim realized his loss, he called police. Motobu Police say no bank deposit to Morokida could be confirmed. The victim told Police Morokida was a total stranger.
