22-time sumo champion Takanohana retires after injury

Date Posted: 2003-01-24

Yokozuna Takanohana announced Monday his retirement from sumo after his comeback bid ended in failure at the New Year Grand Sumo Tournament. The champion decided to retire for good after a defeat in his fourth bout. He had returned to the tournament after resting a day because of a shoulder injury he suffered in a second-day match against top-ranked maegashira Miyabiyama. After losing to Dejima and Aminishiki, both relatively low-ranking wrestlers, he decided to call it quits.

"I made up my mind after yesterday's bout. I had a little hesitation, though, but now I feel refreshed and I'm convinced from deep in my heart that I have made the right decision," Takanohana said. "I have no regrets and I'm thankful to have had such a wonderful career in sumo." His stablemaster and father Futagoyama said he is more relieved than sad to see his son quit competitive sumo.
