Japan Update and Ryukyu Golden Kings partner up

Date Posted: 2011-12-23

Okinawa’s fired up professional basketball team and the island’s premier news organization have joined forces to enhance promotion of the Ryukyu Golden Kings.

“It’s a symbiotic move,” says Japan Update publisher Kari Valtaoja. “We want the Golden Kings to grow in representing Okinawa, and we want to be partners with the team along the way.” The pact inked this week between the Western Conference leading Golden Kings in the Basketball Japan League and the Golden Kings, which have already won a league championship in their short time in existence, “adds to the coverage Japan Update will be doing on the team, its players and its fans,” says Valtaoja.

The Golden Kings, in partnering with Japan Update, will be promoting Japan Update in the arena and team marketing and advertising promotions, and on its Facebook releases. “We want to generate more local and international community interest in our Golden Kings,” says Valtaoja, “and we couldn’t think of a better way to go about it than by becoming part of the team family.”

Valtaoja points out the newspaper already follows the Golden Kings throughout every week and every game of the season, and on into the playoffs. “We’re going to be doing more now,” he adds, explaining “I’ve assigned one of my staff as a liaison with the team to insure we’re on the inside of everything going on with the Golden Kings that we think our readers and online views want to know.”

The Ryukyu Golden Kings have warmly welcomed Japan Update, getting promotional materials ready to roll for the next home stand. He echoed Valtaoja’s desire to expand the team’s influence to the international community, and particularly the U.S. military population stationed on the audience. “We’ve a great team, and we’re on a winning track again this year,” he says, “and we want everyone on Okinawa to catch Golden Kings fever and get behind the team throughout the season.”
