Leaking oil gets into Tengan River

Date Posted: 2011-12-16

Light oil leaking from a boiler room on Camp McTureous has had U.S. Forces workers scrambling to contain it before it contaminated soil and the nearby Tengan River.

Okinawa Defense Bureau officials say the workers have been mostly successful, containing and collecting 1,287 liters of the 1,404 liters of light oil thought to have spilled. Of the roughly 117 liters of light oil unaccounted for, officials say they’re not sure how much actually got into the river.

Okinawa Prefecture and Uruma City were both notified of the incident in a report, with the Okinawa Defense Bureau noting it’s discussions with the U.S. about the need for providing accurate information, as well as complete safety control and measures to prevent future accidents. The leak was caused by a broken hose that links the boiler room to a fuel pump. The hose was immediately repaired.
