Golden Kings slide into conference tie for first

Date Posted: 2011-12-09

The visiting Ryukyu Golden Kings found the Mitane territory in Akita Prefecture a bit chilly as they took on the Northern Happinets Saturday, and lost.

The 78-75 loss to the Eastern Conference leaders was a blow to Okinawa, which was leading the Western Conference going into the game, and led to the Golden Kings falling back into a tie as the Osaka Evessa had a winning weekend. Okinawa bounced back Sunday with a 90-76 pounding of the Northern Happinets, boosting the season record to 12-4, while Akita slipped to 11-5.

Reggie Okosa led Okinawa Saturday’s losing effort with 13 points and 16 rebounds, while Yasufumi Takushi scored 12, David Palmer 11 and Jeff Newton 10. On Sunday, Anthony McHenry led the scoring parade with 12, while Morihisa Yamauchi added eight.

The Osaka Evessa hopped back into a tie for first place in the Western Conference with a bounce-back win over the Chiba Jets, 77-67. The Oita HeatDevils, meanwhile escaped an eight-game losing streak with an 83-67 win over the visiting Yokohama B-Corsairs, and the Hamamatsu Higashimikawa Phoenix had their nine-game roll busted with a 101-98 overtime loss to Rizing Fukuoka.

Elsewhere, in Chikuma in Nagano Prefecture, the Niigata Albirex BB split a pair with the Shinshu Brave Warriors, winning 86-66 on Saturday, and losing a squeaker, 78-75, on Sunday. The Shimane Susanoo Magic outscored the Sendai 89ers for a Saturday 88-81 win, only to fall Sunday, 95-70.

The Shiga Lakestars picked up a pair of weekend victories in Higashiomi in Shiga Prefecture, outscoring the Saitama Broncos 85-73 in overtime on Saturday, and dispensing with the Broncos in an easier fashion Sunday, 99-77. The Iwate Big Bulls made it two in a row in a clash between the cellar dwellers over the weekend. The Big Bulls improved to 3-13 with back-to-back wins over the hapless Takamatsu Five Arrows. Iwate won 87-73 Saturday and 77-70 Sunday, plunging the Five Arrows to a 0-16 season record.
