Kagoshima governor now opposes U.S. carrier drills on Mage IslandDate Posted: 2011-12-09 Kagoshima’s Governor, Yuichiro Ito, is voicing his opposition to Defense Minister Yasuo Ichikawa, and a majority of residents in Iriomote, a city to which the island belongs, and three surrounding towns -- or about 24,700 people -- have signed a petition opposing the relocation of the takeoff and landing drills being considered by the ministry, Ito is to submit his written opposition to the ministry plan for relocating the American practice take off and landings during a meeting with the Defense Ministry. The head of the Kagoshima Prefectural Assembly, Masuo Kaneko, is also joining the meeting. The Navy has long practiced at Iwojima, now known as Iwoto Island. |
