Date Posted: 2011-12-09

An eight-year-old boy has lost his battle with salmonella poisoning, dying at a hospital four years old after eating a meal in his home.

The Okinawa Prefecture Government Living Hygiene Section says the boy’s death was officially septic encephalopathy. He lived in the jurisdiction of Chubu Health Center.

Authorities say the boy ate a meal in his home with family on November 22nd, coming down with food poisoning symptoms that included diarrhea, stomach ache and vomiting shortly before dawn the next day. He was taken to a doctor at a hospital, and released later in the day.

November 24th the boy’s condition worsened and he was again taken to the hospital and admitted, but he died three days later. The other children, a 10-year-old girl and a five-year-old boy, were also admitted to the hospital but authorities say they are now okay. The exact cause of the food poisoning is under investigation, but authorities say a raw egg was included in the meal served on November 22nd.

Health authorities say this is the second salmonella food poisoning death this year. There had been nine cases of salmonella poisoning involving 112 patients during the first nine months of the year.
