Girl Scouts earn badges with Kokeshi Roller Dolls

Date Posted: 2011-12-03

Eighteen Junior Girls Scouts from around Okinawa have earned their skating badge with volunteer instructors from the Kokeshi Roller Dolls roller derby league.

Junior Girl Scouts learned the basic skills covering the proper method to start and stop, forward skating posture, skating backwards, and skating around corners, during the training at Round 1 Sports Center. Advanced skating skills included dancing to a musical beat and playing a game were also part of the day-long adventure. For a fun break, Kokeshi Roller Dolls taught the youngsters Toilet Flush, in which a skater holds her arm out, gets “flushed” by another skater, then spins around and continues skating.

The Kokeshi Roller Dolls also covered safety tips and the selection and care of skates. “During the Question & Answer session, scouts asked instructors about skating gear and what it’s like to be a roller derby player,” says Roller Dolls spokesperson Wendy Brandon. Each scout received a certificate of completion and KRD stickers to take home. The Kokeshi Roller Dolls donated money to cover the costs of ordering the patches and look forward to the next event for Brownies that will be held in December. “It was great to see how quickly the girls progressed from using the wall as a crutch to skating independently,” says instructor Vera Bruptly. “I loved that they were so excited to keep skating!”

The Kokeshi Roller Dolls will be hosting their next bout on Monday, January 16th at Comprehensive Park Arena at 3 p.m. The February 24th bout is Girl Scout Night at the Roller Derby and Girl Scouts from around Okinawa will be in attendance as well as regular derby fans. Girl Scouts will get $1 admission if they wear their uniforms and will go through a “GSA Fast Track” ticket line. They’ll also be seated in a special section and enjoy an autograph session and meet and greet with the Kokeshi Roller Dolls.
